A week into public accounting, do they expect you to know everything??

I worked in industry (construction accounting) for two years out of college. Closing in on the end of my first week at a CPA firm (60-80 people). We’ve done some 1120s and 1040s this week, but most of it was training. I have to say a lot of the time I didn’t know what I was doing.

I’ve never done tax before and I’ve never seen a tax program before. I’m good at reading F/S and analyzing them. So I feel like at times I’m struggling and spinning my wheels and other times doing just okay. I hate asking people for help, but all the people there have been extremely supportive and answer any questions. I usually write down their advice so I don’t have to ask again.

Do they understand that I’m just starting out and I might be slow to begin with? What are the expectations?

A week in? Yeah no one expects you to know anything. Ask questions, take notes, you're doing it right already so stop stressing 🙂

I told my old cpa firm that tax was my worst area and i would miss deductions. They responded by asking me to prepare tax returns and offered no training. I think that's just how they operate. They assume the reviewer will catch your mistakes and teach you.

I mean that's fine for them to ask me to do that, they know I have no experience, so it's just me asking my seniors and figuring it out on my own. As long as they're cool with catching my mistakes.

The difference with the cpa exam and the actual job is the book. You can look in the book, so pull out the books, get acquainted with the irs web site with any other references you need, and like already said ask the questions. You don't have to guess. You are new, not a senior, so relax and read, read, read. Yes, figure it out or they will get someone who is not afraid to try.

You're obviously supposed to be ready to take over as CEO and know everything there is to know. Why do you think they hired you?

I'm pretty sure you don't need to know everything just as long as you know your debits and credits, can heal the sick, walk on water, and turn water into wine.

I only came here to see Skynet's response.

I left after my S1 year and that feeling never went away.
