Years ago, before I finished my undergrad I wanted to be a bookkeeper. Applied to a local firm and they declined.

When I was doing the CPA exams I applied there again. Wanted to eventually work for myself and thought I could learn the ropes from an established company. They were not blown away by the fact I had passed all exams, I wasn’t licensed yet. They were kind but said no thank you. Ive had my license for over a year now.

Recently I added Quickbooks ProAdvisor to my resume, in addition to years experience as an accounting manager. Still this firm lingers in my mind. Their ads are fun, and they seem to enjoy themselves. So I called and asked if they were looking for partners. He told me business isn’t what it used to be, and he couldn’t match my current salary. I told him I’m willing to do part time work until they’re busy.

He sent me a copy of their latest ad, asking for my honest opinion. I suggested a half dozen or so changes and gave him a detailed reason for my suggestions.

New ad came out today, with ALL of my suggestions and my name listed as the new partner 🙂

Hang in there, don’t be afraid to go back to places that turned you down a year or more ago if they REALLY interested you, and try to add the experience and credentials that will wow them the next time! Think outside the box if you’re trying to make a great impression, offer to go above and beyond and you’ll get EXACTLY what you’re after!

I agree! As for QuickBooks, so many accountants/CPAs hate it (and make it known that they hate it) but I've made a lot of money just dealing with QuickBooks issues. In fact, I'm working on a file now. With Intuit owning 80-85% of the market share, I think it would be foolish to not become a ProAdvisor especially with the program so reasonably priced.

To be a ProAdvisor you have to sign up for the proadvisor program. I got it during a promotion for 50/month and I think it's usually 60/month. Then you have to pass a series of proficiency exams to be listed online as a proadvisor. Then you can work your way up (I think you have to be one for 2+ years and pass 3 certifications?) to a gold member. They're eliminating quickbooks 2012 proadvisor on July 15 do I started with that one primary to get my CPE credits for my expiring license.

Oh wow , I didn't know they were eliminating the proadvisor….I signed up twice to become an advisor, but just didn't have the time to finish the materials. (what a waste of money). I think I will go ahead and finish before they eliminate it, I thought it was a valuable too to quickbooks, plus free software updates. I'm glad the question was asked.

No never fear they're not getting rid of proadvisor. Just after July 15 you can't take the exam for QB 2012. You can still do 2013, online and Mac. I'm guessing they sunset the previous year every July to get ready for the future exams. It's just if you want to say you did 2012 version time is running out fast.

I'm also working on the EA (enrolled agent) exam because I passed REG> 2 years ago, never worked in tax, and bombed the ea exams that are put out for free on the IRS website. (older exams like the AICPA releases older CPA exams). Unless you practice tax on a regular basis (which I will now) you're not likely to retain what you studied for REG after you get that 75!
