For all those out there in the “no accounting experience, over 30 club,” stay in the game, and stay positive.

I applied for a ton of jobs over about a month and I got my first choice employer in public. It is a small, local firm, and I’ll be doing a little bit of everything.

Here’s my advice: Don’t just apply online or cruise the usual career sites. Do research, find a human to email or, even better, send a letter in the mail. Make it custom.

I believe that my cover letter got me an interview hands down. I had no luck getting an interview with any job that I applied to online submitting only a resume (there was really nothing to put on it!).

So, it can be done. I went from no accounting experience and five years out of work (by choice) to being employed. If you’re in a similar position, don’t give up. Also make sure to show that you have some soft skills, that will go a long way.

Congratulations! My two cents: it helps to apply to the jobs that have annoying personality/intelligence tests online or require you to duplicate your resume info into their database. They tend to get fewer applicants because the application process is so tedious.

    Congrats, Lion!

Let me add something: DON'T let on how old you are. Once you land a job, this includes not talking about ‘You remember when all of your high school buddies were upset about Kurt Cobain's death.' Or any other similar give-away about your age.

I'm a 30+ that is out of work, but when I was working I quickly found that I was treated differently once people figured out my age. It didn't lead to any sort of age discrimination, but I was uncomfortable with it. The younger accountants see you as ‘old', but the managers that are your age still treat you like you're in your 20s. It's best just to do good work and leave everyone guessing.
