I recently had to fill out a background check with HireRight. I’m worried about what may happen. One of my jobs was an unofficial T/A position. It was basically a favor to a professor who needed help with some technology. I put it on my resume (listing the university as my employer because a resume critique told me to) and when it came up in interviews I was very straight forward and told them exactly what it was. Obviously when the background check is done the university will have no record of my employment. What should I do?

Sounds fine to me… You already explained it. We do background checks and new hires straight out of school it is not uncommon to see unpaid jobs. Don't sweat it!

Yeah, I think if anything pops up its easily re-explainable I wouldn't worry about it.

I had a hireright background check last year when starting for a new company. As long as you explained it to your potential employer you will be fine. The position may be flagged on your background check, but the company should disregard since you were upfront about it.

For a resume, you can put anything as long as you can talk about it.

On a background check, you should only submit “official” or “verifiable” items. Could your professor verify the TA stuff if they asked? If everything is legit, even though it was unpaid, then you have nothing to worry about.

They may ask, or they may not care enough to ask, but since you didn't lie about anything I would worry.

I had to submit the background check online. The information from my resume was already input into the system so I figured if I deleted the position it would raise a red flag. The professor now teaches at a different university but if it comes up I will contact him to help with verification.

I don't see it as a big deal but it should make people question the advice of a resume critique-if your gut wasn't to list it that way, don't. I don't think it will cause you any issues but you shouldn't have been put in the position of feeling like you needed to explain anything on your own resume.
