Work Experience Requirement

I just passed all four sections of the CPA exam and am starting with a big 4 (fresh out of grad school) in their indirect tax department. Not sure if any of my supervisors have their CPA. When I took the job I kind of assumed mostly everyone would. However, I think they have other designations like J.D. and tax ones.

My question is, if my supervisor doesnt have their CPA does my time in that department count towards my work experience requirement to be licensed? How long do I have after passing all the exams to get the qualified experience?

No, the work experience has to be under an active, licensed CPA. However, if you can find someone in your organization that is above you and oversees some of your work and can confirm that you are working under them then they can sign off on it. As far as I know, you can wait forever before getting your work experience and actually becoming certified.

Hey @cantpassagain1 sorry to sideline your post. But i would be grateful if you could help me.I have recently cleared all sections too and i too wish to start my career with Big4, its been a month since I have started applying but not getting any responses. I would be very happy if you could guide me as how to tailor resume for Big4. (I am new in US and have relevant work experience from India).
    Thanks.

@as I was lucky because my school did an event every year where all of the CPA firms would come and you could meet people and try and get a job. It made it easier. Id just try to get the exam under your belt while you search for firms.

@bourne gotcha, thanks for the insight.

Experience depends on the state too. Here in IL supervisor is not required to be a CPA.

Experience depends on the state and your best option is to contact your state board and ask them directly.

In some states, you have to be working directly under a CPA. In others, like the state I am in (Kentucky), as long as there is a CPA who can sign off on my hours worked, I am good to go. The person signing off does not have to be my supervisor and doesn't even have to work for the same company! I could have Jim Jack from a company on the other side of the state sign off for me. So it completely depends on the state. Ask your board and good luck on your job! 🙂
