I have 3 people acting as referrals to pwc and at least one person referring me to each of the other big 4. I went to a top-tier school, I have great industry experience and I’ve passed 3 sections of the CPA exam. It has been one month and no contact. I’ve gone to events, networked, sent e-mails, called, everything. What the hell??

Also applied to several other large regional firms and only one has contacted me. I just did a phone interview with them but wow they are like at the bottom of my list.

From what I can gather:

Good GPA and attending their events (i.e. make sure the recruiter has seen your face before) = on campus interview

Then the ball is in your court.

IMO, once you get to the office visit, the partners, managers, and seniors are looking for someone who can work well with others; this is where the ‘fit' comes in.

They are picking students who have the grades and the intangibles. I've heard many people say they'd take a student with a 3.3 GPA, worked in college, and has superb social skills over a 3.8+ GPA, minimal work experience, and mediocre social skills any day of the week.

After college i was offered a position with Deloitte– worked there for a bit before i switched to governmental accounting and took a job with local government–

but alot of it was networking and meeting with the recruiters, for me i made sure they knew my name and who I was– if they like you– they will remember you and they will think of you when they are selecting folks(this can go both ways if your a know it all they will remember that too and might pass you by), it seems they really liked my technical skills– it may have changed because of the economy as of late, but i interviewed with all big four during a career fair on campus.. i was called back to all four firms.. and Deloitte called me back to offer me the position within 30 minutes of leaving the day long interview– like mentioned before- i interviewed with 7 different people easily from senior staff members to managing partners.

You are not giving us enough information. Are you applying for experienced or entry-level? On-campus or off-campus? How long have you worked in industry? What is your GPA? Maybe you've tried to contact them too much? Maybe your email/resume/coverletter writing skills are not so great?

It could be a number things.Just because you get a couple of referrals doesn't mean anything. This is especially true for entry level postions (1st years referring their buddys who are still in school don't count for much). The referall process is more specifically designed for experienced hires. More than enough entry level hires come through campus recruiting.
