I’m wondering if it’s a good gesture/necessary to write a short thank you note to the partner again after they extended the offer at big 4. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, that's absolutely the correct thing to do, add something personal from the interview so you'll jump start their memory.

If they extended the offer in person at the interview, then I would. If, however, you interviewed, went home, wrote a thank you note for the interview, THEN received an offer…it depends. If the recruiter called you to give you the offer, then I probably wouldn't. I received a congratulatory email for my offer from a manager I interviewed with without first thanking her for making the offer/saying good things about me to get the offer – I responded to the congratulatory email. If the partner you interviewed with called you to make the offer, then maybe I'd send a quick “thanks again” email but I imagine you would've thanked the partner on the phone anyway so even that would be unnecessary.

Short answer: it certainly won't hurt to send a thank you note but I'm not sure it's really necessary.

I'm old school. I think a handwritten, personal note thanking them for their time (with or without offer) speaks volumes.

I had a Big 4 interview on a Thursday morning with a HR manager, senior manager and partner. The interview went well and at the end of the meeting I said to the HR manager “I hope you hire me”. She responded with “I hope so as well.” I then wrote a personalized thank you e-mail to each person within a few hours of getting home. About an hour after that I got a call from the HR person congratulating me and saying I would get an offer. Ten minutes after that the partner called and said I would get an offer. The conversation quickly transitioned to logistical matters in what I needed to do to formally accept the offer and complete all the necessary paperwork.

I wrote no more thank you e-mails after that since I essentially thanked them on the phone. So I think it depends on the situation and how personal you get with each person you interview with.

But before the interview I had already been talking with a senior associate and an additional HR person as well. They are the ones who initially set me up with the interview. I did not reach out to the additional HR person, but I did send an e-mail to the senior associate conveying my excitement to begin work. But at that point, our relationship had become more casual and informal, so it was not necessary to write a traditional thank you note.

Wow! That was fast. I guess in this day, a “snail mail” note would be untimely. I've been out of the hiring scene for a long time.

The important thing is that you are appreciative and they see it.

    Congrats!

Always write one to anyone you spent a large amount of time with during the interview process. This includes (but is not limited to):

    – Your HR Rep

    – Any partner/manager/ect you specifically interviewed with

    – Any employee who was assigned to ‘show you around'

In my experience, I ended up writing one of these to about 5-6 people after my interview, and once I got an offer I actually received like 3-4 e-mails back right as I got an offer (expressing their congratulations on getting the job). I only then had to really make 1-2 ‘extra' e-mails back to my original interview contacts once I got the job.

Thanks everyone for your input! I did write a short note to the managing partner to thank him for the offer and got a response back as well. since the offer was communicated through a recruiter and the formal acceptance was over the internet, I felt a need to thank the partner who ultimately made the hiring decision.
