Silly Big 4 Question

I know this seems silly, but I have a question. I have accepted an internship offer from a Big 4, and they are throwing an ice breaker style party for the interns. It is themed the 80’s and will be at a roller skating place… What should I wear? Like I said, it’s a silly question, but I am nervous. Thank you for your opinions.

I'd play it safe – like a single glove, jelly bracelets, side pony kind of stuff. Things you can take off/change if it doesn't seem right.

    FAR 11/2012: 80
    AUD 2/19/2013: 90
    REG 5/14/2013: 76
    BEC 11/2013: 85
    Ethics: 100
    Waiting on the packet....

Congrats on the internship! Have you met anyone yet or started?

Personally I would not go all out. If you're a girl maybe crimp your hair, maybe a skirt and a neon top? Or jeans and a neon top, Nothing crazy. If your a guy honestly I'm not sure I'm to much help. I'm thinking mc hammer pants are not a good idea.

I think this is slightly bold of the firm I love to dress up in 80's stuff, 80's clubs are in here but to meet the partners and other interns I wouldn't want to end up being the only one dressed up.

    A - 61, 91!!
    B - 78!
    F - 76!!!
    R - 71, 73, 74, 69, 77!!!!

    Finally done!

This is my 2nd attempt at the exam, I had two parts passed (failed many) and I stupidly quit, big mistake. Now I'm back and with a vengeance!

I agree with wendywhite. A toned-down version of a Cosby sweater (a fun pattern or colors, but no over-the-top embroidering or anything) and dark jeans would be appropriate (for both male or female outfits). If the weather is warmer, a short-sleeve “bowling shirt” and jeans (for a man) or short-sleeve neon top and jeans (for a woman). Either way, stick with jeans, sleeved tops, and closed toed shoes. You can “professionalize” all three of these options by wearing a collared shirt underneath the sweater or finding a collared, pressed version of the bowling shirt/neon top.

And this is not a silly question at all. I interned twice with a Big 4 firm and both summers we had an intern “casual” baseball game. It was always supposed to just be us interns and the HR staff, but a few partners “randomly” dropped by during both events (as they did at all of our events, I later realized). The first summer, I wore sandals and shorts and had to meet the office managing partner. Everyone else was wearing jeans and polos or official baseball jerseys. No one chastised me, but trust me, it's better to be on the safe side.

As a helpful note too for casual Fridays: at least at my Big 4 office (in the Midwest – things might be more or less lax where you are), “casual” meant swapping your work trousers for dark jeans. This meant wearing your normal collared, button down, sleeved shirt with bootcut dark jeans (no capris, skinny jeans, etc for the ladies) and closed toed shoes. Most people actually skipped casual Friday because wearing heavy denim and dress shoes is really uncomfortable in summer heat!

Sorry for the text wall. Hope this helped.

Maybe I should have mentioned that I am a male. I start later next week and the date for the event had not been announced, so maybe I can ask some guys I hopefully meet next week what they will wear. It's not a super dressy city… Think the South. I figured closed toe shoes and jeans were a given for this. How about a popped collar polo with maybe a jean jacket?

That might be a little over the top though. I like the idea of a bowling shirt, since it might be hot. I hope we can to some mlb baseball games!

I think jeans are the minimum in any sort of business setting, even if it's an informal event like this. When I did Big 4 training this summer, even at the informal events with alcohol involved, jeans seemed like the absolute minimum for bottoms. As far as a shirt, a popped collar polo sounds great. A polo with jeans was what I wore on Fridays at my client, so it's definitely not too dressed-down. Really, you can't go wrong with any collared shirt.

    I'm a guy, if that matters 🙂

Hey,I think as the theme is of 80's you should wear loose shirt and trouser as at that time this type of wear was a part of fashion so what do you think about it?
