Should I forget about Big 4?

So I’m like your typical student and didn’t focus in the beginning an now I realize my mistake but its too late. I was unaware of Big 4 previously.

My GPA is a 3.0 and I can get it up to a 3.2, and if were to get all A’s, then a 3.4. But that is not going to happen.

On top of that I have 3 W’s and 2 F’s. Anyway, what should I do? Is there any chance?

I also have a personal appointment with a PWC recruiter but not I am starting to ask myself, is there any point?

I live in New York and next month there is going to be a networking event for accounting. So I will go.

As far as experience goes, I did VITA which is under the IRS, where I was a Site Manager, did taxes.

So, should I forget about Big 4? Do I have any chance of employment?

I decided that If I don’t get into Big 4, I am going to join NYPD.

    What are your thoughts?

    Thank You

I have a 2.8 GPA for my undergrad and work for a Big 4. It's not all about GPA but would they consider you a good fit for their team. There is so much that is taken into consideration other than just having a good GPA. I mean just because you don't get a job with the Big 4 it does not mean that you have to give up a career in accounting. Working for Big 4 is not what's it all cracked out to be. Yeah its great experience but most people only last 2 years and are ready to jump ship and go to private.

    AUD - 73, 72 retake 7/2/2016
    BEC - 8/20/2016
    REG - TBD
    FAR - TBD

I am so ready for this nightmare to be over. Been at this way too long.

I do recruiting with Big 4 and I thought they would just take all of the kids for 4.0 GPAs and call it a day. That is not how it works. In fact, kids with 4.0's were among those cut. Get your GPA above a 3.0 so you can start talking with Big 4. From there, they are more interested with whether or not you will be a good fit for the team. Our firm looks for very outgoing fun and sociable candidates. I recruit specifically for audit so you do a lot of talking. Questions we ask constantly to each other are:

Would you want this person on your team?

Can you see yourself working with this person?

Would you be friends with this person outside of work?

Do you think this person will be comfortable talking to the client?

Are they professional and well spoken?

    If yes, you are in.

you have a better chance of getting into big4 than NYPD

There are 2+ year wait times assuming you even pass the interviews

I would drop my accounting and cpa prep in a heartbeat if NYPD was actually recruiting

With regard to big4 its all about networking and what ti807910 said.

I had constant 3.5+ and applied every season to each of the big4 for an internship….never got a call back or even a reply. Mostly my fault because I never attended any of their events or networked.

I assume you going to Baruch or Pace?

Ahh, I see. So it's not all about GPA. But how about my F's and W's? What would raise an eyebrow.

Truth be told, my original goal was to be an nypd officer, its just the corruption that bothers me.

@funtiks. I took the exam 3 years ago. Both my friends are nypd cops. I am still waiting. Still deciding on what to do.

jeeez, I took the exam last year and was told wait time is about 2 years.

Big4 is all about networking from my experience.

I know couple guys who got in with sub 3.0 GPA but they're smooth talkers and have very pleasant personalities.

@funtiks get official transcripts from your school that you can send over. Those shouldn't have the F's and W's on them. I am actually in the process of speaking with a Big 4 because my friend works there and got me a meeting with her recruiting manager friend. My unofficial ones have a couple D's on them that I don't want to be seen (needed a C to pass for these particular classes, so I retook and got better grades). But yes, my friend said now that I'm passing the CPA exams, grades won't matter as much. In fact, even she had a GPA under 3.0! I do as well, by .07

@naz2k57 I'm currently an NYPD detective with MBA CPA & CFE. Do not quit the CPA whether you get hired by the NYPD or not. It is extremely valuable on and off the job. You never know what the future holds and it is a great resume item to help advance your career either way. My advice, study hard and finish, it's worth it. I'd be happy to provide any further advice.
