Question about start dates

Quick question for anybody who has gone from an internship to a full-time position at a Big 4: when exactly did the firm contact you about a start date? I’m starting full-time this fall after interning last summer and I’m just trying to get an idea of when I might find out my start date. I have a feeling it won’t be until sometime this summer.

Also, do they generally give you a choice of different dates or do they just tell you when you’re starting? These kinds of things might vary from office to office but I’m just wondering. Thanks!

    AUD - 11/30/12 - 89
    REG - 1/17/13 - 89
    FAR - 5/28/13 - 87
    BEC - 7/18/13 - 89

    Done!

I didn't intern at the big4 but was hired through on campus recruitment. i was given an option of start dates and industry sometime in May – for dates in September through October and they try to accomodate you as much as possible but you dont always get what you request….

    AUD 85 (11.10 - expired), 0 (2.13), 82* (5.13)
    BEC 49 (5.09), 38 (5.11), 75* (10.11)
    REG 65 (2.11), 74 (11.11), 0 (2.12), 81* (4.12)
    FAR 67 (5.12), 73 (12.12), 78* (2.13)

Your firm should be sending you onboarding materials in the mail. If you have any hesitation, reach out to your recruiter or use the generic HR phone line (I think all Big 4s have them) to inquire.

There are several start dates each year. It looks like you have a choice of start date however, you will mostly likely be “guided” to pick a particular one. This typically coincides with your graduation date. People graduating from schools on a semester cycle, graduate earlier and hence the earlier start dates are “suggested” to them. People graduating from schools on a quarter cycle pick from the later start dates. If you have any conflicts, like you already booked a 3 month vacation in Bali, it is best to bring it up with your recruiter or HR people so they can instruct you on what you should do. They'll probably just have you start at a date that is most accomodating and is not a big deal. Note that if you have friends from school who are going to the same firm, you might not be starting at the same time as them if you end up picking an alternative date from the one “suggested” to all of you. And you will probably not be attending the same training session as your friends.

If you're not getting anything in the mail from your firm by summer time, reach out to your recruiter or HR to inquire. But I could call to ask before summer anyway…just to have peace of mind 🙂 Good luck and have fun in the Big 4s!

If there are different start date options (Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring) they would bring that up during your internship. The exact start date; they usually tell you.

    BEC (11/17/12): 88
    AUD (1/18/13): 76
    REG (2/27/13): 88
    FAR (4/15/13): 90

When I interned, I was offered to begin full-time in the fall I didn't find out my exact start date until the summer, and then I requested to begin in January since I was finishing up my Master's. There was a small pool that began in January and most began in October.

    R - *77*(02/'13)-Becker & NINJA
    A - 71('11); *87*(04/'13)-Becker & NINJA
    F - *76*(08/'13)-Becker & NINJA - "server upgrade" survivor
    B - 60('11); *82*(10/'13) -Becker & NINA

    DONE, DONE, AND DONE.
