PTO as a first year?- Big 4

I just found out my start date this week, September. They asked us for any time off we have planned and specified that PTO is not encouraged during busy season (obviously).

My question is, would I be frowned upon to take a week off for vacation end of November/beginning of December, after just starting in September? This is around the time my family usually takes our annual vacation.

I know we’re given a substantial amount of PTO as a first year, but not sure what the cultures like when it comes to utilizing it.

Just tell them it's already planned, paid for, etc. Most of the time people will understand and accommodate. Your boss may or may not like it very much but they are going to get it back out of you and then some.

It depends on line of services (tax, audit, advisory etc) and your team. For tax, end of November/beginning of December is definitely not a busy season, and many people are taking PTO during that time (some are actually taking PTO to study and take CPA exams). As soon as you join the firm in September, it is good to let your engagement team know so that they could plan accordingly just in case if something comes up. Congratulations!

No1 gives a crap about first years PTO. Just dont go overboard. This question from HR is for initial scheduling/resourcing. You may miss out on a big opportunity to join a team as resources are always changing. Otherwise, you will get worked till your nails fall off. Good luck kid.
