    I’ll start:

    Pros:

    Money

    Health Insurance

    Other benefits

    Room for growth

    Good training

Can (relatively) easily go somewhere else after

    Cons:

Work many, many hours (at least in the beginning)

Is very big – probably just deal with the people in one’s particular department

@ Whyme – Thats a good point. Like I mentioned in my original post, I think the biggest con to working regional or mid-tier is not having that name on your resume. I really believe it helps get your foot in the door with potential future employers.

My intention wasn't to insult the Big4 @BaseballCPA, so I apologize that it came off that way. I don't have any dealings with the Big4, so I can't speak to anything they offer other than no overtime (from what my friends told me they get paid) and a great resume booster. It may, very well, be true that all of my perceived “pros” are also “pros” of the Big4, but someone else will have to list those from their personal experience.

One of the partners at our firm came from AA before they got dismantled, while another one of our partners (who was just named CEO) has been here his whole career (which is my goal – to become partner and make a career at this place). Maybe the true answer is that is just depends on what you are looking for. There will always be someone to look down on what you do whether you go Big4, industry or stay mid tier. There is always someone making more money, doing better, seeming happier or whatever.

I just turned 25 in January, so I still have a lot of time to figure this out. All I know for sure is that my wife and I want to be happy. I will do everything I can to make that happen, and right now that is working here.

How does this sound to you guys?

Work in auditing at a midtier firm for several years -> Go into E&Y as an experienced hire -> Get a job at Google.

I mention Google because I've been dreaming to work there and I know E&Y audits the company, so there may be an opportunity. This route is just a possibility and who knows what's coming in my way in upcoming years, but I'm wondering what you guys think about it!

Depends on how long Google remains E&Y's client. You can always just get to Google by consulting or offering a black book of business.

I think I know someone going to work at Google soon…but not as an accountant.

Also depends on what kind of clients and industries the mid-tier firm has. For instance, if that particular mid-tier's office location only deals with wholesale/retail clients, then you might not get as much or any exposure to media companies. It's a little easy to get pigeon-holed to a few industries b/c you start off at one client, and if they stay with your firm, then you'll likely return season after season, until you are senioring that job.

I'm hoping to get my hands on those companies! Hopefully the fact that the firm is located in LA will help.

Sometimes it doesn't matter where you're located. I was constantly sent to Modesto even though it was around 5 hours away… Uhg.. Modesto. I hope that I never have to go back there.

    This is from Wikipedia:

“In variety of other past rankings, Modesto has scored in the top ten worst places to live due to its high cost of living, high unemployment, long commutes and high crime rate.”

LOL! I really hope we don't have a lot of Modestoliebers on here…you really just crushed them all! I can believe those stats though, I went last year and I thought I was going to get stabbed in the streets.

Don't people working at big 4 get over time pay? I hear people saying “hourly wage during busy season is very low” many times and was wondering about their over time pay. Some manager level employees don't get over time pay but get performance bonus instead, but I'm asking about staff level.

Elaine…I wanted to do something similar to that….my current job resume is heavy on tax accounting at a very small boutique but once I get a CPA I could potentially end up with a decent auditing job and if I work my butt off become manager and then apply to the big four….hopefully. If not….I'm not sure what else I can do really…..if I get the CPA and nothing opens up for me….:(

No overtime pay at Big 4 – straight salaried employees. When people talk about their hourly wage, they're just talking about the fact that when you go from 50 hrs/week to 80 hrs/week and your pay doesn't change, effectively, your hourly rate has just gone WAY down.

in those busy season months, staff people at Big 4 are generally making close to minimum wage when you extrapolate.

If those 3 letters after your name don't help to get a decent accounting job, then not sure what does.

    FAR - 80
    REG - 80
    AUD - 81
    BEC - 74, 74, 77, done & licensed!!!!!
