Poaching of National-Firm "First-Years" by the Big 4

for all of the current big 4 contributors out there, does your firm frequently attempt to steal first-years away from other national public firms?

if so, are you aware of the characteristics they look for? at that stage of the game (the poaching of first-years), does your firm focus less on the collegiate experiences/transcript? do they put more of an emphasis on what you did within your first year with your non-big 4 public firm?

    edit-

i only ask because an acquaintance of mine with deloitte said something to this affect.

I will be starting with McGladrey soon and I've heard usually once you make senior they take notice in you. Make sure you have connections obviously (friends or acquaintances working there, typically in the associate to senior associate range) as they are the ones that will want to recruit you for what ever type of referral bonus they can get. Most referral bonuses in Big 4 require those who receive the referral to have at least one year of public accounting experience. This is typically why McG/GT have their staffed pouched frequently. The referral bonus is also why you see this phenomenon happen lol.

I have never seen my company (at least in my office) poach a “first year”. Unless something unexpected happens, they just hire enough first years to cover the need in the office.

^im pretty sure the OP is referring to Big 4 firms poaching those with a year of experience working for a national firm.

I work at Big 4 and we haven't poached anyone from other firms really. Probably 95% of our hires at my office come straight out of college, after finishing their masters. Most of them have their CPA when they start. Use your universities networking events to get in. If you have graduated, you can usually still participate as an alumni through career services center, etc.

@cpa2141 – I know that. I'm Big 4 so “my company” = a Big 4 firm. I have never seen my company poach a first year from other firms.

Oh got ya, k917. In reading your first reply I thought you were talking about “poaching” first years before their start date or something of that nature.

I've never heard of poaching staff, only levels higher than that.

“for all of the current big 4 contributors out there, does your firm frequently attempt to steal first-years away from other national public firms?”

No, never experienced or have heard of it. Really, first years are usually pretty loyal to their particular firm, and switching firms without a good reason as a first year looks pretty douchey.

“i only ask because an acquaintance of mine with deloitte said something to this affect.”

I would say this is the exception rather than the rule.
