Hey guys, just wondering if anyone out there had some tips for attending Meet the Firms. I have never been to one before. I have only been to local accounting firms career nights and they are pretty casual. I am so nervous, and I always feel so awkward at these types of events. If anyone has some tips and pointers it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In my city we have a Student Night put on by state society. They have a bar there… it's like a dinner where students are sat with firms at tables….. so I can totally see where DJN is coming from!! Been there, seen that!

So my tip is to keep you hands empty. to shake hands or to listen effectively so you won't be fidgeting with brochures and nick knacks, and stuff. Drink the drinks and eat the donuts, but empty hands. :-)).

I remember I went to a mixer put on by a largish firm, the recruits were mindfully drinking 1-2 drinks–I had only one beer… the full time employees on the other hand were going for it! LOL it was pretty funny

September 11, 2013 at 10:19 pm #444846acampParticipantOh thats a good point, I picked up a cheap leather'ish portfolio–good place to store resumes and a good place to stash the freebies. I ironically (never even got an interview) rocked an Armamino Mckenna bottle opening for like the last two years, it disappeared recently 🙁 LOL

1) Don't bring your purse. Just have a nice leather resume folder.
2) Have a story, know why you choose audit/tax/advisory, etc.
3) Write down people's name as you talk to them. I actually sent out thank yous email to them after the event.
4) Please wear business professional clothes . I know this sounds like a ‘duh' advise, but i saw a girl wearing backless-clubbing type dress to meet the firm.
Good luck!!!

September 11, 2013 at 10:41 pm #444850AnonymousInactiveFirst, it's always a good idea to look for familiar faces that are on the other side, and have them introduce you to a manager or the recruiter.
If you don't know anyone there (which is common), then feel free to chat up with the associates about anything, while showing that you are interested in the firm. When it seems like your conversation is winding up, ask them to introduce you to the recruiter or a manager+.
Try to relax, and enjoy the night. Don't be discouraged if a conversation didn't go as planned. Move on to the next person/firm as if nothing happened. As mentioned above, get comfortable by talking to the firms you aren't really interested in, or talking to the Becker/Roger reps isn't a bad idea neither. Good luck!

September 12, 2013 at 12:03 am #444852kudawudashudaMemberSo this thread inspired me to pursue the Big 4 and so did the other thread about “How to Join the Big 4?”
I've been searching around all the college campuses for their Meet the Firms event and so far I will be able to attend two. The first one has a hefty price tag of $45 (what gives?) at the door, whereas the college I graduated from is absolutely free! I've also contacted another university to see if I'd be able to attend their Meet the Firms and various Big 4 socials that are available so hopefully I get a positive response.
Question: Would it be too much for me to attend these events and in the case that I see the same recruiters, would it be wrong to say that I might be coming off as desperate? I have a FAR exam following a week after these events, and it may interfere with my studying, but this opportunity is definitely worth the risk correct?
REG = 58 (02-20-13), 75 (05-01-13)
AUD = 67 (05-29-13), 79 (08-29-13)
BEC = 83 (07-31-13)
FAR = 72 (10-29-13), 69 (02-27-14), 73 (04-16-14), 81(08-13-14)Study Materials = Becker 2013 + Wiley Online Test Bank

We are representing our firm at a Meet the firms event next week. Basically, don't pretend like you know more than you do. Don't talk to the tax guy about things that are above your experience (non-recourse cancellation of debt on insolvent Scorp blah blah). They can sniff out when you are being fake.
Conduct yourself as someone who is interested not just about a job, but the people who are representing the firm. Be confident. Don't try and “force” anything. They can sniff out a fake. Go in there knowing you don't know as much as them, and make them feel you can be taught. Make them feel that you can be teachable, are humble, and willing to learn.
