Hey all,

Just accepted an offer with KPMG and will be starting in the Fall? I’ll be attending the audit associate training in Orlando in October as well. I’ve heard different things on the amount of time I’ll actually be in my office versus at clients site. How much time are audit associates in their actual home office especially as a first year? Any information would be great, thanks!

Hi! Congrats on your offer and acceptance. I will be starting at EY this Fall. People I spoke with at my office said they could probably count of both hands how many times they were in the office throughout the year – if that is any guidance for you.

I mean, it probably all comes down to your location and what kind of clients you're on. For example, I'd imagine if you were on a bank client, you'd probably be in the office a lot more since bank hours are pretty specific. Anyone else have any insight? I'd like to know more as well!

Very very very rarely in the office. It also depends on the job, but generally speaking you'll almost never work from the office.

Oh and if you're auditing a bank, you're at their headquarters, with an access card which allows you to work all hours LOL

I did have a hedge fund/PE client that closed at 3pm; CFO would be pacing outside the door at 2:55p reminding us of their office hours. Although, we never managed to make it back to the firm's office, Haha!

I work in a local Atlanta firm. Although I rarely travel out of state, I work at the clients(out of the office) about 75% of the time. But during busy season I'll be out of the office for a month straight. But the fact that I come back home every night makes it so I don't have to leave my family.

@vvSPAZvv thanks, i actually will be working with banks and hedge funds.. Not sure which but I believe mostly banks. My practice handles both so whatever they put me on.

I went a full 3 months after starting without setting foot in my actual home office. Onboarding occurred at another office and then I was at a client site up until a mandatory training session.

As a side note, I live about 35 miles from my home office so not going in is a godsend. A few people I got hired with do all of their work from the office, which sounds miserable to me.

Main reason I was asking was simply for the fact that my gf and I are looking to move out together and I wanted to get a sense of how often I will actually be travelling to my office. Granted I have no idea where the clients sites may be so essentially looking for a place in a certain area may not even matter at this point.

I wouldn't say never. As an audit first year, I may have been at the office for around a month and a half or so and most of tgat was for trainings, first couple of weeks I wasn't assigned and some of my teams liked to work from the office during the summer. You will also take some trips in for confirms, picking up binders/supplies for team and firm/recruiting events. Your client schedule will matter more – if you have a friend, ask em if your schedules been created yet. Then IF it stays the same between now and when u start (it may not), then you'll know where your clients will be.

You'll never really be in the office unless you're unassigned or if it's some sort of weird situation. It's rare (unless you're unassigned a lot..don't want that).

wow what a difference with Tax & Audit it seems, they should emphasize things like this more. i remember as an intern I would always borrow the audit associate's desk since they were rarely there haha

90% client 10% office is typical. However it just depends on your client(s). I had a client my first two years that did not have room for the auditors to sit. So we worked from the office almost exclusively (except for 3-4 days for walkthroughs).

typically time spent in the office includes training, unassigned time, and time spent archiving your engagement.

Good to read all the feedback from everyone, thanks again! One last thing, is travel reimbursed? When I say travel I mean driving to the clients for the time assigned to them. Dont actually remember seeing anything about this in my offer. Thanks again

My firm does $.56 per mile over your daily commute to the office so if your normal commute is 20 miles round trip and your client is 30 miles round trip you would receive $5.60 for your mileage. And as far as time, we just bill the client any amount of time outside of your normal commute time.

I heart that the big 4 don't like you to put your CPA designation in your email signature. I work closely with GT (and they are HORRENDOUS BTW) and none of their CPA employees have CPA in their signature. Does anyone know why?
