Is a 3 an okay rating for a first year in the Big 4?

I just started at the Big 4 in November and its been a big learning curve. From the luck of the draw I got the hardest senior for reviews and one of the hardest managers……

I don’t expect a two from them, but most likely will get a three.

Is getting a three okay for a first year? I know that it is pretty much an automatic promotion and that second year reviews are the most important.

I am also in Big 4, and just began the evaluation and review process. From what I've heard, the vast majority of first year staff get a 3. A few may get 4/5 (those who are just terrible), and a few may get 2's if they were truly exceptional. Being a first year, it is nearly impossible to get above a 3, not because you aren't exceptional, but because the nature of your work and role rarely allows for you to go too far above and beyond. The point where you need to worry is when you are on the bottom of the 3 range and borderline 4.

As a second year, you are actually given responsibilities that you can show your strengths, so I would try harder in the upcoming year to be a little more self-aware at all times. In my firm, you are ranked in terms of leadership, professional, and technical competencies. Technical is only one of three areas and is the only one related directly to your work, professional is a hybrid and includes stuff like how you relate to the client, leadership also includes some things unrelated to work like recruiting, networking, and other things. Again, my knowledge is hearsay, but it seems a 3 is fairly standard unless you were lucky enough to have the opportunity to excel in your first year so far.

I'm a first year too. Got some 3s, a 4 (2 months after I started), and recently got my first 2 (yay!). I've heard first years usually get a 3 rating overall.

I am at the Big 4 too. A 3 is normal for a first year. As See Pee A mentioned above, most fall into that bucket. All first years are learning and adjusting to auditing and so, they end up doing pretty much the same audit areas. Second year is a step up and people start to really look at you. I also got a 3 my first year. 🙂
