My firm asked me to start early for a specific client, but I interned for this client over a year ago. Will this affect any independence issues??

Independence usually doesn't factor in for associates or seniors as far as past association is concerned. I would just be very transparent with your firm and make sure they know of your history with the client. It is a firm by firm decision to allow the associate/ senior associate to continue to work on that client.

Like I said, I would be as transparent as possible.
