mystical guyMemberI was reading a discussion about Big 4 Accounting firms and someone suggested that it’s easier to get into Audit if you are “hot” or “good looking.” Reason for this was that you’re expected to be a good sales person in the audit team, to sell services to client (e.g. people in IT Audit can suggest further services). He said that all the auditors he had seen had one thing in common-very good looks. Is there any truth to this notion or does he have a warped view of reality?

LatinoTurkCPAMemberAssuming that hiring managers are paradigms of virtue, ethics and professional behavior is a faulty belief. If this was true, we wouldn't have had the Sarbanes Oxley Act, or accounting scandal after accounting scandal. The truth of the matter is that although businesses are there to generate a profit, the business is run by humans and humans are not perfect objective profit making machines. They are people with ambitions and likes, dislikes, wants and desires.
If this was the case, there wouldn't be an issue of racism when it comes to hiring.
Lets keep in mind, in fortune 500 private accounting positions a couple decades back people without college degrees would be able to work their way up from the mailroom into an accounting position. The actual required knowledge derived from general education to do the job effectively is actually fairly low. Most of the job specific knowledge is derived from on the job training.

tough_kittyMemberStudy Monk: I have long beautiful hair and I don't wear any make-up π
….and I agree with most posts on here….The guy who hired me thought I was smiling AT him when I had the interview….
As far as Big 4, I saw who they hired in my area – I'd say most were of average looks….but very diverse in terms of nationality…..

Over about a month I gained a boatload of confidence (getting out of some bad situations etc.) and instantly became a boatload more attractive to the guys around me. I'm pretty sure that my teeth, hair, complexion, etc. didn't change drastically over a month – only change was the confidence.
However, there are also people with a better set of DNA to work with. We just have to deal with the hand we're dealt – some have to be more creative than others. π
Lastly – Shel made a good point that being pretty is a blessing and a curse if you're female. Guys will hire you for the wrong reasons; girls will hate you for the wrong reasons. I had a boss (in retail) who tried to mess up my job every way she could cause she liked the guy who liked me!

GutiParticipantmystical guy,People all over the world were asked to rate men and women on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being, “very good looking.” From Africa to Asia, they rated the same people the same!
I donβt know if you are trying to imply if there is a correlation between beauty and race. If you are saying that, which race would that be? Im just curious.

tough_kittyMemberLilla, I totally agree with you on the “blessing and a curse” comment!
CR7, I think he meant to say that each race has the same definition of beauty.

Study MonkMember@tough kitty You already told me that I am to young for you, and if used me for my good looks I would feel cheap like a Big 4 auditor.
I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:
"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"
