I was reading a discussion about Big 4 Accounting firms and someone suggested that it’s easier to get into Audit if you are “hot” or “good looking.” Reason for this was that you’re expected to be a good sales person in the audit team, to sell services to client (e.g. people in IT Audit can suggest further services). He said that all the auditors he had seen had one thing in common-very good looks. Is there any truth to this notion or does he have a warped view of reality?

In my opinion, 85% of hotness comes from confidence. If someone (let's not make this a sexist thread) is a CPA, they should already have confidence by default. Therefore, all CPA's have hotness in them. They just need to learn how to channel the inner hottie.

    Licensed Florida CPA:
    B: 71, 73, 79
    A: 83
    R: 78 (expired), 77
    F: 74, 74, 80

    It's finally freaking over.

I think we passed sexist thread a long time ago! Someone's physical attributes should have NOTHING to do with whether or not they get hired for a job as a CPA or flipping hamburgers. To call a woman or a man “hot” is NOT a compliment. It's demeaning and degrading, not to mention childish. I do agree with Gatorbates regarding confidence. For example, I'm a 45 year old woman, who could NEVER have been thought of as “hot” even at my youngest and best, but I'm smart and confident and I've managed to survive just fine on brains alone.

Globally, body image is a huge problem for women. As professionals, we need to work past this notion that being a certain size or having a certain color hair or skin tone somehow makes you better than someone else or makes them better than you. I'm thin. I always have been. People don't mind saying “I hate you because you are so skinny” to MY FACE! I've never once said “Oh I hate you because you are a normal sized human being who can buy their clothes in the grown up section.” Shouldn't we be judging people by the content of their character instead of the hand they drew in the genetic lottery? But maybe that's just the crazy old lady in me coming out or possibly the POCA!

It depends on a lot of things… your interviewer, your mood/personality the day of the interview, the weather, your performance in your interviews, how well you develop a rapport with interviewers…

All else equal, being more attractive doesn't hurt… but I've met my fair number of cuties and non-cuties in Big 4. I think there are probably a few attractive ones that got hired (in part) because of their looks. I think they were also fairly qualified regardless.

I heard that, Kricket! I don't know what a POCA is, but I'm with you…people should be hired based on capability, not on looks. Now, with that being said, I don't think you'll find a man alive (myself included), that doesn't enjoy working with a woman who's got a nice, big, sexy, voluptuous BRAIN. Ha! See what I did there? You thought I was going somewhere else with that.

But I'd be lying if I said I didn't like a woman with a nice booty (hey, we're all human!). As long as you keep it to yourself, keep it professional in the workplace, and never judge/evaluate someone higher because of their physical attributes, a little looking never hurt anyone 😛

In men, there have been studies that correlates height with a increase in salary. So obviously physical attributes do have an influence on work. Other studies shows that more attractive people get promotions, hired and paid sooner,

It doesn't have to do anything with sexism, it's just the truth. It effects men as well but for men it is also strongly correlated with status and class.

Attractiveness is subjective. I think the more appropriate term is “well presented.” You don't have to look like a super model to get hired. But being well dressed and groomed has always been a factor in first impressions. I resent that people think I may have been hired based on my looks because I am a woman. I dress appropriately and try to present myself with confidence at all times. I think those qualities are valid factors in making a decision about someone's future in any role.
