I was reading a discussion about Big 4 Accounting firms and someone suggested that it’s easier to get into Audit if you are “hot” or “good looking.” Reason for this was that you’re expected to be a good sales person in the audit team, to sell services to client (e.g. people in IT Audit can suggest further services). He said that all the auditors he had seen had one thing in common-very good looks. Is there any truth to this notion or does he have a warped view of reality?

I used to play soccer with one of the partners at KPMG here in Miami, and he told that they for every 10 employees they hire, 6 had to be good looking with above 3.0 GPA and 4 high GPA nerds regardless of looks. He said that most of the time if they had to pick between an attractive woman with a 3.0 GPA and a very average looking girl with a 3.70, they will go for the attractive one. He used to tell me that at the end of the day good looking people sell themselves easier in an interview, and owners of companies love to be audited by good looking women. Maybe this is a Miami thing, bear in mind, we do have a hot climate.

I currently have 3 years in as a Big 4 auditor (still trekking, trying to at least make manager). From my observations, yes, it seems they hire good looking auditors, and no I am not being conceeded at all. I had a 3.9 GPA so i'm probably in the “high GPA regardless of looks” category. I don't know if it's an actual requirement about looks, but i do know that hiring decisions rely heavily on personability. As auditors we are constantly speaking with the client, thus, if you do not present yourself as somewhat of an outgoing individual, then you will not get hired. Which brings us to my other observation, that none of my co-workers are shy people. Presentation is big with these firms!

Well think about it yourself. Would you rather be surrounded by hot people that suck up to you or ugly people who suck up to you?

As long as your meet minimum hiring requirements (say cut off gpa) looks is definitely a contributing factor in getting hired. The excuse is often ‘personality' and ‘communication' skills but that's often untrue too. People are more interested in interacting with a good looking person and will say that it was due to superior personality when in fact that is not the case, it was the looks that made them interesting.

I have a friend who works for one of the big 4 and they told her she looked too hot and asked her to “tone it down” She has long beautiful hair, perfect skin, and barely wears ANY makeup. I guess they didn't want her looking “too hot” while she was working. She is also in audit.

Being good looking helps in just about every aspect of life, period. Not always fair, but at the end of the day people like attractive ppl and give em a halo effect that since they look good, they must be nice, smart etc etc.

I think it goes to show how competitive big 4 audits are. You need every advantage you can get and that hiring may eventually boil down to non-merit factors such as looks.

Good looking people tend to get jobs easier than average looking people in all industries. Good looking people tend to be better received all through out their lives and this is reflected with more confidence, better eye contact, and stronger hand shakes.

@Cole I think I am in love with your friend and I haven't even seen her 😛 She in California to lol 😛 SoCal or NorCal? Don't answer that….

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"
