Fall 2013 Big 4 New Hire: Very Scared about GPA check

I recently got a job offer for Fall 2013, and during the interview process I listed my Accounting GPA as 3.25 and my overall GPA as 3.44. Well a year of school later my final GPA for accounting is a little different if you don’t include my accounting electives and principle courses. It actually falls below 3 if you exclude those extra classes (2.86). With the extra classes it is still around a 3.20. My question is will my employer rescind my offer based on my in-major GPA or does anyone know exactly how the big 4 firms will recalculate your in-major GPA. My school adviser told me that upper-level business courses are actually included in the calculation (which sounds crazy now). My overall GPA actually ended up increasing a little bit. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks..a little freaked out.

I can't say from any particular experience, but I have an offer from a firm and the bottom line that most people told me was did, “anyone say you needed to keep a particular GPA to keep your position?” My friend is working for a big 4 soon like you and they didn't tell him he needed to keep up his GPA to any extent. Isn't a 100% answer but hope this helps if you don't get any other info.

    BEC 84! (05/22/14)
    REG 77! (08/28/14)

I'd be surprised if it changed anything, I mean, by and large GPA is mostly an initial screening process. That said, you never know

Thanks guys, the funny thing is the contingent part of the job offer letter only says “maintenance of academic standing”. So my assumption is that maintaining my overall GPA should be enough, but it is still a little scary that my in-major dropped below 3.

My situation is a little different than yours, but by and large similar. I got an offer with the Big 4 for an internship fall '11. My overall GPA was 3.5 and my accounting GPA was like 3.1.

The summer '12 during my internship I got a full time offer. My overall GPA was still 3.5 and my accounting GPA was 2.97. Because it fell below 3.0 I guess they had to talk to me about it.Same situation as you with taking out the 2 principles of accounting courses.

They said my offer was contingent on me keeping a 3.0 in my accounting classes in my MAcc program. That brings us up to the present and I was able to maintain a good GPA throughout the program.

I don't know if that helps at all, just my experience.

Hey CPA Runner, Did you have any accounting elective courses that could have been included or did they say you can't include those either. Your situation sounds great (the fact that it worked out), but I didn't intern with them and I just got a full time job offer. Did they seem very strict about it during your conversation like it wasn't something you could work out had you not the chance to do your Macc.

I work for a big 4 and they have rescinded offers based on GPA. I don't know the particulars, but what did your offer letter say about contingencies? Worse comes to worse you can call the recruiter, then you will at least have an answer.

Don't worry too much about it. I knew a few people that got hired in my accounting program before the program even started (it is a certificate program). They were mostly Big 4 hires. Many of them barely passed the program with Bs and Cs. I guess they were hired already, so who cares right?

I am connected to a few of them on my Linkedin account, and apparently they are all still staff.

    FAR 78
    REG 87
    BEC 78
    AUD 78
Passed all exams on first try! Good luck to everyone!

I work for Big 4 and I'm pretty sure that once I graduated, I had to send a copy of my transcript to headquarters. I believe it was mostly to verify that I got that degree but they could have checked GPA as well. If you can't fix your GPA at this point, then stop worrying. You could possibly contact your recruiter and explain your situation to them. In general I have found that they have been willing to work with people, especially if they liked you (which they must have because they hired you) as long as you are honest.

    FAR: 72, 68, 73, 78 (passed)
    REG: 61, 70, 73, 63, 78 (passed)
    AUD: 65, 84 (passed)
    BEC: 89 (passed)

NASBA gave Doby a passing score, Doby is freeee!!
