Effect of public accounting on love life - Page 2

This is primarily a therapeutic post.

A girl told me recently that she didn’t want to go out with me again because I told her I decided to stay in public accounting (audit). She was former Big4 and knows how audit is with hours, stress, etc.

This gets me wondering…why am I doing this? I don’t intend to someday be a partner who makes lots of money but also works 7 days a week. I don’t want to be a GL accountant, controller, or internal auditor. I got this job to open doors, but there are few doors I would want to walk through. And why stay in public any longer when it’s not sustainable (i.e. destroys chances of forming a relationship)?

Any one else have similar thoughts/experience?

    Thanks for reading my ramblings.

az – Move on and count your blessings! She sounds high maintenance to me and that isn't a good quality in a woman or a man! My hubby is an electrician, blue collar all the way, but he stood by me through going back to college, the CPA exam and now cancer. There were lots of times that I'm sure he secretly wished I'd give up the CPA dream, but he never said it. He just pushed me out of bed at 4am and said “go study so I can retire at 50” then went back to sleep for an hour.

You can do soooo much better!

@azCPA2B – Are you sure that it wasn't due the fact that it was her unqualified opinion that you did not fairly represented yourself and overstated your assets.

When all else fails, make her a mix tape.

Wow, sounds like you all have awesome spouses! Thanks for the wisdom.

It's funny that I know how to pass the CPA exam, but I can't figure out dating haha

@az Well I wouldn't date an accountant hahahaha, and less from public practice.. probably because I know the environment and I usually like guys with different backgrounds than mine.

But that is my personal preference 🙂 as usual…

Sounds like a big excuse from her side, let it go brother! Don't let a bad relationship get in the way of your career, big 4 experience is the best of the best. Get a few years then you can transition to corporate for a very good position. I am in corporate finance and I would have liked to have big 4 experience, not only for the job but for personal knowledge. You also might want to consider the things you don't want such as being a controller and what not, you didn't work hard to become a cpa and be a staff accountant only. Make it payoff.

    FAR - 71, 68, 74, (8/31/14) 78 ✔
    REG - 67, 71, 71, (10/18/14) 78 ✔
    BEC - (11/29/14) 86 ✔
    AUD - 73, (4/4/15) 86 ✔

I can't believe this is over! 2 years and 3 months..

@OP- I worked at a B4 during the first year that I was dating my husband (it was literally one year- I started my first job out of public on our anniversary). It was tough but it was doable. If you are with the right person, you figure things out.

That being said, once you get more serious and move in together/get engaged/get married/have kids, you will start to have to make more compromises with your career.

Also, it is completely OK to not want to be in public your entire life. There is a reason so many of us put in a few years and get out. I rather enjoy my steady work schedule and being home at 615 every night to eat dinner with my husband 🙂

    F- 7/13- 84
    R- 10/13- 79
    A- 11/13- 99
    B- 1/14- 86

    Licensed in PA- 3/20/2014

This exam ALMOST defeated me back in 2006-2008, but I came back and WON!
