I talked on the phone with a B4 recruiter last week after a partner asked him to give me a call. He asked which locations I was interested in, which line of service, and asked me to forward him my transcripts, which I did last Wednesday. Should I e-mail and ask him if he’s had a chance to review my transcripts or should I just forget about it and forget about accounting? =/

Why would you forget about accounting if one Big 4 recruiter doesn't call you back? It doesn't hurt to call or email the person and say you are just checking in and to let you know if he needs anything or has any questions. Something to that effect.

It's just that I think Im getting old (24) and don't really have any experience (crappy job). Public accounting firms usally go for the 22-25 yr olds and I just don't want to be doing general accounting for the rest of my life. Go big or go home!

Wow, consider me ancient then. I graduated with my BBA at 26, didn't start my first job until I was almost 28 (which was only a few months ago). My friend I graduated with entered public accounting at 30. I am actually the youngest person at my firm. I also had no experience.

You have to find what's right for you. Maybe Big 4 isn't where you want to be, but rest assured there will be many people there your age. If you want to go public, do so. But you'll be lucky if you snag an offer on your first attempt…or tenth. It takes time. Trust me, you are nowhere near ‘too old' to be starting in public accounting. The position I'm in, I just replaced a 50 year old.

First I'd follow up with an email just asking if he's got all of the information he needs, or if there is anything else you can provide to him.

I'm LMAO about the rest of this though. OLD? I'm 43 and was recently hired as an accounting manager. The person I replaced (who still helps me out one day a month) is 76!!!!!!!!!!

But yeah, if you don't land this job definately give up on accounting. I'm afraid that any occupation, including fast food you might want to rule out becuase the process takes too long 😉

@ParanoidAndroid. Lets be a little more respectful than that. McGladrey and GT are good places to work and have their pros and cons as much as the other Big 4 firms do. Besides, he or she can always start work at McGladery/GT, work there for a few years, and if it was still desired, get pouched as a senior by one of the big 4 (happens all the time, but typically from the top mid tier).

I'm a senior about to graduate and I'm starting to try to network right now with some people at the Big 4 but I'm not sure how to go about finding their contact info. Currently I've only been able to get into contact with 2 tax managers at different firms.

@lakersfan24..Do you have a Linkedin account? If not, create one. Make it look professional and include a picture if possible (people reply more often to those with pics). Then just google *Recruiter or Talen Recruiter PwC, Deloitte etc and the city*. At least a few names should pop up with a LinkedIn profile, then just connect to them and tell them what you're looking for. Some have their e-mail on their profile, so I just e-mail them my resume..

I am not good with social networks which I assume LinkedIn is. so if I create an account, I won't get a ridiculous amount emails about nothing or requests from weird people? I started an account and was not sure if I wanted to continue. Your post kinda got me curious.

@ParanoidAndroid…But in order to connect with them don't you need someone else to make the introduction? I thought you couldn't just connect with randoms? Or did you pay to upgrade your account?

@tncincy..LinkedIn is not annoying at all. Just stay away from recruiters from places like roberhalf because they will just spam you or call you twenty times a day..make sure you turn off your Activity Feed or whatever it's called so that your contacts don't get an email every time you make a change to your profile..

@Lakersfan.. I paid for two months 25 a month ( don't forget to cancel your subscription), but it was really worth it. I connected to recruiters and partners from all the Big4. I usually just send then a message saying I want a career in public accounting an if there is any advice they can provide or anyone they can refer me to..

@ParanoidAndroid…I just paid for the upgrade and I was wondering what is the best way to use the 3 messages that are allotted to you per month. I'm just curious what's the best way to maximize the linkedin account? You mention that you connected to them but you can't connect to them if they're 3rd degree right? Thanks for any help

Is it worth filling out the “Talent Profiles” that can be found on the career pages of the Big4 firms? Or should I be trying to connect directly with recruiters via LinkedIn and/or email?
