Dress Code at Big 4 Firm–Suit Vest? - Page 4

    Hello!

So, my style of professional dress includes sporting a suit vest. I usually wear a suit vest with a tie, along with matching pants and dress shoes. I’ve gotten compliments and even won “Best Dressed” Award in college for looking sharp at my business meetings with Beta Alpha Psi and Delta Sigma Pi (accounting and business fraternities).

I’m starting my first accounting job as an auditor with Big 4 in California. I’ve heard that my firm usually goes with the simple button down dress shirt, dress pants, and dress shoes (no tie, suits only for clients and meetings type thing). Would it be a bad idea to continue wearing the suit vest ona daily basis, or do you think it’s more of a negative impression on me being a new hire?

I checked a lot on google searches for other people’s opinions and I’ve not seen any worth noting. I hope I can get some of this forum’s opinions! If it helps, I’m 5’7, pretty fit; I lift weights and exercise regularly; I’m also Asian. For reference, I googled a picture of what I’m referring to. I don’t plan on wearing the blazer/suit top with the outfit, it’s just the vest/tie + dress pants + dress shoes I consider wearing, and of course bring the suit top in case I need to wear it.

I don't unbutton more than 1 button, but some people do.

If you have a crew neck undershirt and a even 1 button unbuttoned, you will look like an idiot.

Once last article I will post on this subject, then you guys are on your own.

A Man's Guide to Undershirts: History, Styles, and Which to Wear

    Quote:
The big disadvantage of the classic crew-neck style is its high neckline. If you’re planning on wearing a dress shirt or similar button-fronted shirt, you’ll need to keep it buttoned up all the way to hide a crew-neck undershirt. Depending on the height of the T-shirt and the cut of the dress shirt, you may even find undershirts that can only be worn with a buttoned collar and necktie, which are of obviously limited use.

“Replacing the crew neck with a V-neck is the obvious solution for men who want to wear a shirt with a few buttons left undone. The depth of the V-shape can vary, but most are cut so that you can wear at least one button (besides the collar button) of a typical dress shirt open without showing your undershirt.

These are a more practical option for undershirt purposes, and retain the same good absorbency of the T-shirt style, but they’re even more casual (we might go so far as to say tacky) when visible. Don’t wear them as a visible layer, at least not in plain white or heather gray. If you must have a visible V-neck T-shirt, make it a brightly-colored layer.”

Reel it in, @wannabe. It's just a shirt. Reel it in.

@itsjustavest art of manliness is one article among many that I have already posted.

Look man. There is senior manager at my firm (Big 4) and he routinely wears crew necks, balloon shirts, pleats, and all we do is make fun of him when he leaves the room. Do you want to be that person?

Do you want to be THAT person who dresses outside of the culture and gets a tainted reputation?

Seriously? Pleats are out? Now I'm starting to feel like the guy that hung himself in Shawshank. What about suits, flat front only?

LMAO at this thread!!!!!!! I have nothing of real substance to add here, except that I would rather see the exposed collar of a crew neck under a man's dress shirt with one button open that mass quantities of chest hair! No one wants to see your “hamburger meat”! 😉

Actually, I agree with wannabe. V-neck doesn't necessarily mean the V ends at your belly button. V-necks now are more like crew necks with a dip in the middle than the plunging neckline of yore.

If you have taco meat up to your neck though (shoutout to Mints' hamburger meat, lol), I'm not mad at a crew neck either. At that point, it's more stylish to cover up that taco meat than to let it blow in the wind like somebody from the swinging 60s.

So my synopsis, crew neck when there's a taco meat flood on your chest, V-neck otherwise. Wife-beater only if you're trying to smooth out your landscape without adding bulk, lol.

“If you have a crew neck undershirt and a even 1 button unbuttoned, you will look like an idiot.”

About 90% of the guys at my firm do this, including me. You probably don't have chest hair. I don't want my chest hair sticking out.

As far as pleats go, only skinny guys shouldn't wear them. So, if you're a skinny guy with no chest hair, your style seems about right.

There has to be men on this forum who choose to NOT wear anything under their dress shirt? Simply put on the dress shirt (no wifebeater, crewneck, v-neck, etc). This is also assuming you don't have any chest hair prone to be exposed from unbuttoning 1-2 buttons. The undergarments may add bulk to your frame and the more layers you have on, the more hot you'll feel, and no one wants a sweaty accountant. Or does everyone wear something underneath, like it's an unwritten golden man rule?

I sure don't wear undershirts. A real man has a little chest hair popping out. Why wouldn't you? It's like musk.

I always wear an undershirt of some kind because even when it's cold out I sweat like a pig at a luau.
