Dress Code at Big 4 Firm–Suit Vest? - Page 3

    Hello!

So, my style of professional dress includes sporting a suit vest. I usually wear a suit vest with a tie, along with matching pants and dress shoes. I’ve gotten compliments and even won “Best Dressed” Award in college for looking sharp at my business meetings with Beta Alpha Psi and Delta Sigma Pi (accounting and business fraternities).

I’m starting my first accounting job as an auditor with Big 4 in California. I’ve heard that my firm usually goes with the simple button down dress shirt, dress pants, and dress shoes (no tie, suits only for clients and meetings type thing). Would it be a bad idea to continue wearing the suit vest ona daily basis, or do you think it’s more of a negative impression on me being a new hire?

I checked a lot on google searches for other people’s opinions and I’ve not seen any worth noting. I hope I can get some of this forum’s opinions! If it helps, I’m 5’7, pretty fit; I lift weights and exercise regularly; I’m also Asian. For reference, I googled a picture of what I’m referring to. I don’t plan on wearing the blazer/suit top with the outfit, it’s just the vest/tie + dress pants + dress shoes I consider wearing, and of course bring the suit top in case I need to wear it.

I saw a post about EY emulating Google by 2020 and I did not consider that! That is true, and I see the general advice is to go and fit in as a new hire as opposed to stand out. I definitely will have my suit vests on hand, ready to whip out, but for my first day I'll show up in the business appropriate attire of a nice dress shirt, dress pants, and dress shoes.

I didn't want to start a new thread but I'm looking on opinions of BROWN DRESS SHOES. I usually wear only black dress shoes to compliment my grey and black suits. I also wear black dress shoes with my black and grey dress pants on a business casual environment. Are brown dress shoes necessary to rotate as I start full time work? I'm looking for opinions, as I do not own any brown dress shoes. I always have worn black to every event requiring dress shoes since it is so versatile, and black just looks sexy! Let me know!

Not owning brown shoes is kinda weird. You don't have any grey suits? And you don't own any khakis or similar type color pants? Sounds like you're a one trick pony. Did no one notice you wear the same stuff over and over lol. Tell me you at least have a brown belt..

I talking about undershirts. Trill? Is this 2001?

An unbuttoned dress shirt (no tie) with a crew neck undershirt is a disgusting look. You really have to be clueless to wear something like that.

Nobody wants to see a faded, sweat-stained undershirt around your neck.

If you're going to wear a dress shirt with no tie, you have to wear a wife-beater or a v-neck. It's common sense.

No crew necks? Do you prefer to see people's chest hair sticking out? Maybe some gold chains too?

    Wow..

NEVER wear a crewneck undershirt with a unbuttoned dress shirt (maximum 2 buttons from top). YOU WILL look like an idiot.

while i respect your opinion WannabeCPA, i have to disagree with your strong opposition to the crew neck under a polo. If worn appropriately (tight fitting, clean, bright white) this is a very appropriate look.

If you prefer the pale skin/dark chest hair look under your polos, then that is just gonna have to be what you roll with.

If you prefer the WIFE BEATER outline under a dress shirt, then i would suggest just staying home from work that day. Call in sick.

Well, at least now I know I have options. Lucky for me I don't have much chest hair, so I can rock the v-neck. Ah the benefits of being part American Indian.

Just to confirm what many others are saying: dress similarly to your peers.

Our office has a staff who insists on wearing a full suit every day. It is not inherently bad, or inappropriate. But he has a reputation as “the suit guy”. His counselor actually talked to him about it, informally, implying that it was a little different.

I think if you want to stand out, stand out as a guy who does excellent work, not as a guy who dresses uniquely.
