I interviewed with one of the Big 4 on Monday. Before the interview, the recruiter told me that I will be notified if I am hired or not by Tuesday. But it did not happen. And today she sent me an email saying that the team liked me but they were not sure what level of staffs they need, and she hopes it would be my level. In my opinion, I think she is BSing and just try to make me feel better. I think they are waiting for another person to get back to them before they tell me no. Is it really how it work? Am I really a backup?

Right, if they didn't want you at all you would have just been rejected already.

It's possible they're still looking at candidates or you could be a backup until someone else responds. I wish they would just be honest, but for some reason the whole recruiting process is not very transparent.

Well, awhile back, I did overhear my audit partner discuss with the manager and others about which level associate they need to hire. This was after they had interviewed some people too, I believe. I thought I'd mention this, just so you know there is a possibility they're not just bsing you.

This comes off as bit harsh but who cares if you're back up? That means you still have a chance. That's how I got my internship, I was 3rd place when they were only 2 spots. One of them rejected and I accepted the offer. In the event that you don't get an offer, they STILL liked you enough to not reject you immediately. Continue to keep in touch and try again next year, or even AFTER you've attained experience elsewhere.
