CPA License – Wait or apply now

    Hello all,

I just passed my last exam and was wondering when I should apply for my license. I’ve worked in an accounting setting prior to taking my exams for a total of 2 years (I think that qualifies not 100% sure).

I’ll be working at a Big 4 accounting firm starting next month in tax and am curious to see people’s thought’s on applying for licensure. I think the only current advantage is saying i’m licensed since I can’t sign returns or anything since i’m 23 and not even a staff yet. Cons I can think of are the process of applying and the fact that I would have to start CPE sooner. Should I just wait until I get a year of experience in a FT associate setting to apply?

    Thanks in advance!

I'm in the same boat. I work for the State but I have over a year when you count part time experience. I plan on getting my WV license activated soon (within the week).

Also, I really just want to sign my name and have business cards with CPA on them!

The state that I'm in, if I don't apply within 90 days of becoming applicable for a CPA license, I have to pay an extra fine when I do finally apply. Noticed it on the application last week when I applied for my license.

Might want to consider how long it will take to get issued your license. I've seen on the forums where some states take like 6 months!

Most firms will provide you with CPE opportunities. I'd apply now if I were you.

Time it so you get your license bonus at the firm. Other than that – whatever works best for you.

Here in Cali they fee you coming and going and the firm will likely cover all that so if you are paying out of pocket, that's a consideration.

Can you get a licensed CPA to sign off on your present experience?
