Ive got a year of experience with a large mid-tier firm and expect to have all 4 exams passed within the month. Do I have a good chance to switch to EY or Deloitte before busy season?

It doesn't hurt to apply if you want to work for those firms but passing the CPA exam is pretty much expected in accounting firms. Kind of like passing the bar exam for lawyers. A new graduate may get hired before they pass, but they won't move up without passing, and experienced hired are expected to have passed. It's table stakes, nothing special at those firms.

Do you have any special skills that differentiate you from thousands of other applicants? That's what will get you hired. That and being drinking buddies with the people who make the hiring recommendations.

Damn. I wana work at the Big 4 but I don't have any special skills, credentials, experience, etc. I don't drink either. What can I do?

I work for, and was hired, at a Big4 without having my CPA. I am currently studying for it. You will not need it at my firm until Manager level.

I had 5 months experience at a small firm when I applied. Personality has A LOT to do with getting hired, moreso than having a CPA or years of experience.

I think once I get in the door, the part about personality will (at least IMO) not be an issue, I am very sociable and can handle conversation well whether it be work related or out of office hours related. I wont have my license, but I will definitely have all four passed within the next month, when I ultimately expect to start interviewing. I think some of my differentiating skills would include a wide variety of audit section experience. Correct me if I am wrong, but coming from a mid-tier, where the clients are smaller, I get to touch more sections rather than I would at a big 4 during the first year or so. With that being said, do you guys think that is a good selling point?
