I’m currently working in public accounting (one of the big 4 firms) and still working on my CPA license. If I left the firm right now (before passing all 4 exams and getting licensed) could I still get licensed when I’m out in private? Couldn’t I just have a partner or someone who has held a CPA license for a long enough amount of time sign off on my license application?

Has anyone had this experience? Your thoughts, advice, and comments are welcome!

How about this scenario…..Been working at Big 4 for 7 months….If I were to leave today and worked as a Staff Accountant somewhere for 5 more months, would that be the year requirement to allow me to get licensed?

    B - 87 1/14
    R - 82 4/14

@kbuddadizzle….that may be a little harder to get the sign-off qualification. It would probably depend a lot on what your new position was and if you were working directly under a “supervisor” who has had their CPA license for 5 or more years.

You should call your state board and ask them.

Yes, call the state board. Many states let you use combined experience from several employers. Just make sure you get the sign off before you leave the firm. You will need to work under a licensed CPA in your new job.
