Hi all,

I am starting work at Deloitte in September in Audit. What is the possibility of switching from audit to another department like consulting or tax? I know that this is not the traditional path. I just want to keep my options open and not be pigeon-holed into audit if it’s something I dislike.

Any advice from those who have made a switch?

My advice is for you to count your blessings ! A lot of people on this forum would love to be in your shoes… You haven't even started and you're already thinking of switching? This just speaks bad about your work ethic.

Switching from Auditing to Tax isn't too hard, but you'll have to put in a year or two before they'll let you jump, and obviously you have to perform well enough for them to want you. Consulting is much harder, and I don't think they take anyone from Audit or Tax unless they're really outstanding. Switching from Audit to Consulting essentially means applying like anyone else would from the outside.

@Jenuno, Just because someone prefers a service line over another does not mean it's a reflection of one's work ethic. That sounds like sour grapes to me.

@Op, audit to tax is definitely doable, but I have no experience first hand on how to do that. Reach out to people at a Big 4 you can trust to get better advice.

Consulting would be very tough to switch to. From the several Big 4 Consultants I know, it's not nearly as glamorous as so many think it is. Especially if you're married, because you are travelling and living in hotels all the time. That alone makes me not want to do it.

Tax- You originally said you don't want to be pigeon-holed. Unless you are sure you want to do tax, probably don't go in. Once you're labeled as “the tax guy” you will always be, the tax guy. Even after you leave Big 4. Audit has so many better exit opportunities.
