Big 4 – requesting change of client

For anyone working in public accounting, do you know if requesting a change in client is common? I just started a couple weeks ago and the client site I’ve been assigned to is a 2 hour commute (each way). I work in a very large office, what really gets me is my firm also has an office in the very same city that my client is located in. Guess they’re understaffed or something, but every other person on the audit is located in that office, yet for some reason I’ve been added to the engagement team. I don’t want to create a bad reputation since I just started, but this is going to make my life miserable for the next 2 months.

You can bring it up with scheduling/manager, just gear it as a to bringing it to their attention, not demanding a switch. Chances are, unless you have a good reason to get the switch, they'll just say that someone has to be it, and its you!

Question, do you live relatively close to your home office? Or is the commute extra because you also live far away from the office? I live relatively far from the office (north) and we have some clients that are a good ways south of the office–so, although its not the firm's fault that I live far away–they'll work with me on avoiding the way south clients. If you live near the office, they're basically gonna chop it up to, “it has to be somebody, nobody wants to do the commute, but you're the lucky one picked”

Unfortunately that's the answer I think I'm going to receive. I'm in a major metropolitan area, about 20 minutes from my office. Probably bring it up with my transitional coach to get some advice before speaking with anyone from scheduling, but I'll likely just have to grin and bear it. No good reason for the switch, just the absurdly long commute. Thanks for the input!

Well, maybe they didn't realize you live 2 hrs away from that client?? Sounds like a good idea to ask your mentor first.

You could ask – is it common to have to commute 2 hrs each way to a client's location? And see what they say…
