After an internship two years ago, I’ve received an offer from one of the big4 and now is about to begin working full-time in about 3 weeks. And I need a written offer letter to attach for immigration service and was wondering when people usually receive the written/firm offer letter stating the start date, salary, and such information during this waiting process.

And in case I need them ASAP, is it rude/improper to ask for the recruiter for a written offer letter right now?

Once you start, you can ask HR for something called a “letter of employment” for your purpose.

Such letter is common request for various reasons (including when people need such letter when signing lease for an apartment).

Hey guys,

I have a job offer from one of the Big 4. I told them I am eligible to work in United States and do not require work sponsorship. Truth is I lied but by the time I start in Fall 2015 I would be eligible to work in United States. I am not an international student / candidate per se but I don't have much of a legal status in country as my previous international student status is being converted to a Legal Permanent Resident.

So here's my question: When exactly is the background check? In my brochure it says around 2 months before your start date… What documents ( not information) would I have to provide for background? Also when the background comes back do you think recruiter would find out my Social is of a non citizen? In my brochure it says bring legal citizenship or work-permitting documents on the first day of your work i.e Fall 2015…Do you think the recruiter would check in between? As I pointed out earlier I marked the boxes saying I am authorized to work in U.S without the need for work visa.

papajoe: No, it's not rude at all. Just ask HR/recruiting for a copy of your offer or a confirmation of employment that you need for immigration purposes. Likely, they know (or someone in the group knows) what you're asking for and they get you a copy.

yoboy: I wish I could tell you that's okay, but I wouldn't play games like that and take a big chance. They won't “let it slide” on your start date. I would clarify with HR what it means to be a valid employee when you start and if your situation will work. Something like “So when we filled out the original application, I checked that I will not require a work visa since I will have my visa by the stated start date; however, I want to confirm that is the proper classification and if I need to do anything else?”

Alternatively, if that is not okay with them (and if they like you and want to hire you) you could also ask for an extension of your start date to January 2016. Most firms would be happy to do that since it gets rid of you while there's not much work in the fall. In any case, don't play games with your career. You may really make a partner/HR angry if you lie OR give the appearance of lying or misleading them.

They will do an everify which will show that you may not be elligible to work in the US and they will ask you to provide your passport or greencard. I think I had to provide my verification within 48 hours or they would revoke my offer. My social security number when its run tells my employers that I need provide support for my eligibility to work in the US.

You should have been honest and considering that you would have your greencard by the time you started work they may have given you a pass since they wont have to sponsor you.

Yoboy – considering that you post about having bad debts at an American university that you don't want to pay and now about lying on employment forms, I'm surprised you want to be a CPA. You should go back to whatever country you're from and leave accounting jobs in the US for people who are honest and ethical.
