Say I interview for Big 4 and do not get the job; how long will I have to wait until I can interview again?

The first interview I ever had was with a Big 4. Needless to say I failed miserably and didnt even get through the first round. About 3 years and 20 interviews later I interviewed with them again and am currently starting with them in the fall.

Yah, three years experience is,about right from what I've seen. 1-2 if you have experience at a Grant Thornton, BDO, Mcladrey type of firm.

The 3 years was going from Sophmore to Masters.

Sorry, I may have been unclear — I wasn't asking how long you should wait until you apply to a Big 4 firm, I was asking how long you should wait until you reapply to a Big 4 firm if you didn't get the job the first time. I already have public accounting experience under my belt. I will make senior at a med-size firm at the end of this year.

I would say unless something changes (i.e. their hiring needs increase unexpectedly), one you get rejected in the on campus interview process you'll find it hard to interview again before graduating.

That's only speaking generally of course. But really, I'd say 2-3 years of public accounting experience is a good bet in terms of interviewing as an experienced hire.

That helps to clarify. Generally, HR online systems reset their applications around once a year, some do it more often as positions are posted and released, but usually not longer than that. Your email and account may still be in their system, but your previous application will likely be inactive or deleted by that time.

Going back to reapply to a firm definitely shows you are very interested, but it probably also depends on why they did not offer you a position the first time around. If it was for a lack of cultural fit, then another year of experience is unlikely to help; however, if it was just a decision on some other factors (i.e. had to cut someone out of a pool of qualified applicants), then reapplying will definitely be a good way to demonstrate strong interest.

Back to your question, probably not sooner than 1 year as that is the typical recruiting cycle and also gives you a chance to show how your profile/candidacy has improved during that time, but perhaps longer. Are you only able to get interviews with the same firm? Unless you have some sort of crush, there are 3 other firms that will give your career a similar boost. In any case, I elaborated on things you didn't ask but just wanted to throw some thoughts your way. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Btw, it's generally a good idea to apply as an experienced hire around Mar-May as this is when some people will leave right after busy season as well as in the fall Aug-Dec as this is when people will receive their bonuses/raises and also decide they don't want to do another busy season!

Of course, these time frames are just general advice. If you come across a good networking option and the opportunity comes up to apply/interview, go for it!

I was turned down. Waited 18 months, reapplied, and will start in the big 4 this fall.

The key was gaining intern experience at an investment firm, and a killer interview.

Sound confident in your choices – ex. Audit or tax?
