Hello all,

I will be working at a Big 4 in NYC and would like to know where people usually live. Are most clients in Manhattan? If so, is it worth it to live there? How about the outer boroughs, Hoboken, Jersey City, etc.

Obviously I will need a roommate (or two) in most of these places. I would like to minimize my commute and live in a somewhat fun area.

Welcome to the greatest city! My wife and I currently live in Stuytown (14th and Ave B near East Village). It's a great area but definitely a little pricey. My wife is in Dental School at NYU and a lot of the students who go there live at Stuytown and have 2-3 roommates. The great thing is it's a quiet area and the size of the apartment is great for NY.

I think client sites really depends on what group you're in – Financial Services, Produces & Services, Technology, etc. but I think generally they will mostly be in the city. Therefore, I would suggest living in Manhattan if you can afford it. If you're really worried about the commute time, I would suggest living in Midtown relatively near Penn Station, Port Authority, or Grand Central. Those are big transportation hubs that can get you to any client if they are not in the city (worst case scenario). From Penn Station you can take the NJ Path or NJ Transit trains to Jersey clients, Amtrak train to clients farther away, Long Island Rail Road out to Long Island, and there are many Subway lines to give you the full city access. From Port Authority those are mostly buses to Jersey or Westchester New York but also plenty of Subway lines. Lastly, from Grand Central, the Metro-North trains will take you to Westchester and Connecticut. Hope this helps!
