I have passed 3 parts of the exam, have never worked in Accounting, and was thinking about trying to get an Associate job at a Big 4. I turned 40 last year. It sounds like they only hire associates in there 20’s? Is it worth trying to start at a big4 firm?

This is very inspiring. I am 48, I need the 1 year audit experience to get the reporting license. I already qualify for the license through education in my state, but I don't want just a license, but a reporting license. Anyway….at my age I was a little intimidated looking for a firm. I've always wanted to work big 4, and I won't cry if I don't, but your post gives me the incentive to find a firm to get that audit experience. I will probably be 49 when I find one, but I am not going to let my age be a hindrance.

I need to pass the exam too, but am looking for a firm.

    It begins with a 75
Been here too long as a cheerleader....ready to pass

I am old guy too at 30, but I do know of a few 40+ staffs in my class (big 4). They are all mother's with families. Most of the Seniors aren't too much younger than me, so it hasn't been to bad.

I like Public accounting, but after auditing for a while. I don't think I could have a fulfilling life working as an industry accountant. Industry is full of dead-end jobs, lazy people, boring work and uninspiring culture.

So now, I jumped into Public Accounting, which I like so far, but all the exit opportunities are not for me. I don't know what I am going to do now. If I was younger, I would have had time to restart, but I'm too old now. I can stay in Public, but then I am worried that I won't have the stamina to last as a manager because I will be in my mid thirties by then. And the pay is ridiculously low for Managers and Senior managers.

So yeah, know what you're getting into because I think I made mistake. Not because I hate public, but because for me the only option right now is the partner track, and I am WAY too old for that path. I refuse to go to industry. Maybe i'll go mid-tier

” Industry is full of dead-end jobs, lazy people, boring work and uninspiring culture.”

LMAO. Uh, no. In some companies this is likely true. But its a ridiculous generalization.

Industry isn't for you personally, that's great. Please do tell me about the “inspiring culture” that public holds!

at 30 you’re not that old, infact, you are young. Most people graduate from college around your age and for them life start from there. You have a lot to learn and you probably don’t know everything out there about industry. You need to have an open mind and be moderate because this economy have its own curve balls and you never know where you might end up. It could be industry , you never know.

I believe there is a reason why most Big 4 seniors and managers end up in industry and that reason is known to all of us.
