Anyone had thoughts of leaving Big 4?

    Just a question.

I am in Big 4 now and I am a tax senior (3 years in Big 4). I get more and more and more calls from recruiters/head hunters seems like everyday. I reached out to my dad for advice and he said if one of those jobs sounds good, then it may be worth going for the interview and just seeing what they have to offer. He says never turn down career opportunities becuase you never know.

So, I did one. Just to try it out. My interviewer said I’ll work less hours, I’ll make a lot more money and my bonus will be upwards of 7-10K a year, whereas I don’t currently get a bonus in Big 4. I just got a call from the headhunter the other day and he said the compensation package is now bigger than before.

I am currently over 40 hours this week and it’s only Wednesday. I am working at a client where the client’s employee’s drop whatever they are doing at 5:00 and leave. They take lunches. They don’t work weekends and they actually get to have labor day off.

It could be busy season talking but damn. Temptation is there. My family is really starting to hate my job for me too which is tough. Ok….definitely busy season talking, but has anyone had these experiences/feelings?

I left public after 9 months full-time because I HATED it. I wanted weekends and to go home at a normal hour. I don't mind working late, but I wanted to at least enjoy my job. I don't understand why people stay if they hate it so much. Have a job you enjoy, especially if the money is better.

Well, I wouldn't be getting the calls for jobs with more money and less work if I hadn't “put my time in” so to speak.

I won't actually leave. I am mostly just jaded right now because I am so tired I can't even focus yet more and more work keeps coming and I having to bust my ass with a full work weeks of hours already before lunch on Wednesday just so I can watch football on Saturday.

However, if I get offered 20K more dollars it would be crazy not to seriously consider it. 20K would help me out a lot considering my student loans!!!!

I love my firm and I like my job for the most part except for a few weeks out of the year. However, more money just sounds nice. Especially after another mediocre raise that was as I was told “above average”.

@NotAnother74 – In terms of % increase for your raise, how much did it go up? In my experience, Big 4 raises are much higher than industry.

    AUD: Attempt 1: 60; Attempt 2: 78
    BEC: Attempt 1: 75 (lost credit); Attempt 2: 80
    FAR: Attempt 1: 74; Attempt 2: 74; Attempt 3: 78
    REG: Attempt 1: 76 (lost credit); Attempt 2: 68; Attempt 3: 80

    Finished 11/01/2013!!!

around 6.5%. Salary isn't anywhere near what I think industry will offer with matching benefits.

Your % increase is above what you'll get elsewhere, but if you are unhappy with your base, then it can be upsetting. It's a question to ask a potential new employer once you receive an offer but before you accept.

Honestly, three years at a Big 4 is enough time you give you the experience and ‘clout' that you will need to open doors at smaller firms that will pay more money and provide a better work/life balance.

Answer this question then? For what reasons are you staying?
