I am currently an accountant in hospitality industry with 2 years of experiences that include a/r, a/p, payroll, assist in f/s preparation, etc. I have now been seriously thinking about moving into audit and in keeping with that goal, I passed all parts of the cpa exam. I have been sending resumes to every entry level audit positions i see online(linkedin/glassdor/indeed) but looks like they have been reserved for fresh graduates only coz i keep getting turned down that is if i get any response.
I would love to hear people’s successful experiences about their transition from industry to public, and suggestions on what i should be doing so i can fulfill this burning desire of becoming an auditor.

Being able to see your resume might provide some insight.

Also, don't cpa firms hire for audit in waves unless you are an experienced hire?

If you are not already on linked in you should join. Recruiters (both 3rd party and internal) use that alot. Also, dont be afraid to go with a recruiter if they seem to know what they are doing. They can usually at least get you a phone convo with the HR rep.

I appreciate both your feedbacks and time,

Taxman89: I am on linkedin already. I have gotten quite a few reach outs from recruiters but mostly for staff accounting positions in industry accounting, nothing in the audit realm. I am based in NY, any recruiters you have worked with or know of, are worth the time. Let me know.

public sector unions: i can email you my resume, if you would like. Your insight will be appreciated.

@k_g, congratulations on passing the exams. I was in your shoes (working in industry for a long time). I submitted my resumes to small CPA firms and used recruiters etc. I received many requests from recruiters, but all they have was industry jobs. For an entry-level audit position, most CPA firms hire via campus recruiting in the fall. If you are willing to invest, you may consider an advanced degree. The degree doesn't have to be in accounting. For audit or assurance, CPA firms love to hire STEM majors. I can tell you that it is very hard to get into public accounting these days. You need to invest. Please do some research and see what's the best available for you. Good luck.

Thank you Ultrarunner. It's disappointing to hear that cpa firms don't hire candidates who already have skin in the game with accounting experience and exams passed, at entry level audit positions. one would think that cpa firms would be better served with such candidates than someone just fresh out of school with no real accounting experience. Apparently cpa firms think otherwise:(, which is baffling. At this point, i am really not thinking about doing addt'l years of schooling for advanced degree. But if that ‘s the only option in game, then i might have to painfully reconsider.

Don't get discouraged! We have already invested! Audit firms hire in waves. Keep submitting.. but tbh you won't get a response this time of year. Start back up with applications near the start of summer..

Also, I don't agree with ‘ultra' on the fact it is hard to get into public accounting. Every state, every city within that state, is different. Somewhere a company needs a candidate of your background – both ethnically and in terms of experiences.
