*Just got an email saying they’ve rejected me even before the interview Lol. This is bizarre

    .

A week ago I applied for an IT Audit position with EY. I got an “off the record” call from an EY recruiter telling me that his friend had put in a strong recommendation for me and he was about to call me before I even applied for the job. That did surprise me.. a coincidence there. He asked me a couple of questions, after pulling my resume but then told me that from my speaking he felt that I lacked enthusiasm so that might hurt my chances with them. I was heart-broken, since English is my second language and it’s not easy for me to speak it as good as Americans do. But a week later I got an email that he’s scheduling a technical interview with me. Apart from working on my “enthusiasm”, any advice on how to impress?

@stoleway thanks. That does make sense to me. Though the offices which I applied to have so many people with accents. What will it hurt them to hire one more that actually cares about IT ? Lol. But, you're right. I'm gonna try the other Big Fours and if they also reject me I'll go for the small 10 lol

Well, Big 4 have presence all over the world and I guess they deeply understand the beauty of diversity, so I don’t expect them to be discriminatory or have prejudice towards anyone.

Some recruiters or hiring managers might have their own agenda and it's sometimes difficult to read into what actually goes into their hiring decisions.

Going to go out on a limb and ask if its even possible that you did not sound enthusiastic? I work with many people who have English as their 2nd language and despite trying to find the words at times I can certainly tell whether or not they are enthusiastic.

Yes it is possible that there was discrimination involved, but I wouldn't immediately jump to that conclusion.

Honestly, whenever I get a call about a job interview, I ALWAYS sound excited and I tell them that YES, I am very interested! So, it definitely shows!

Enthusiastic or not, though, the recruiter shouldn't be giving him on-the-spot feedback like that! He should keep it to himself……

To some of the people who mentioned discriminating/prejudice:

Discriminating on accent alone is out of bounds IMO. But what if the accent is thick enough where it's hard to understand a person period? Is that a fair reason to evaluate their communication skills in English? At the end of the day, communication is a huge part of our job as auditors.

Just curious on what all of your thoughts are.

@mla1169, you remember Droopy the dog, that cartoon dog? After paying attention to myself I discovered that's close to how slow I speak, maybe a bit faster, but you get the idea. But I get mixed feelings from people. My former supervisor told me that I sound like Morgan Freeman and he enjoys listening to me speak with my “deep voice” (I hope he's not gay lol jk). But my international friends tell me I speak at a very slow rate. I can consciously speak faster if I practice, because I used to be a rapper.

@tough_kitty, based on how things have gone, I think the recruiter was trying to help me to get into EY, so he gave me some “off the record” constructive criticism. It stung but now I get to practice and try to impress the senior manager on Monday. Some of us are naturals when it comes to impressing these hiring people, but others have to work REAL hard Lol.
