I will be starting work for a Big 4 in Texas at end of this month and I was wondering what kind of advice you could give me as a brand new employee in tax. I will be in the State and Local Tax group. I do not have any tax experience and have about 1 year of corporate accounting experience in a Fortune 500.

    Big 4 Tax in NY

    General advice:

    1) Enjoy the ride and learn to make the best of any situation.

    2) Don't ever let this experience change you as a person.

    3) Make MANY friends at work. You will need them to get through your days.

To add to CPA is lame's advice:

    1) Learn how to balance your workload and don't feel bad saying no if you are overwhelmed with work. If someone comes to you with something that needs to be done and you are swamped, ask the following questions:

    – When do you need it by?

    – How much time do you expect it to take?

    – Let them know what else you have on your plate and be realistic about if you can help them out.

    2) Learn all you can – if you're open to it, you can learn a ton in public accounting.
