Advance Pay in Big 4

Has anyone heard of the Big 4 giving advance pay to new hires?

Is it better to ask for a signing bonus if you’re in dire need of some funds to get you through until you get your first paycheck or get a seasonal temporary job until you start full time with the accounting firm?

    Thanks

I think my Big4 offered $1500 to be paid back over 1-year.

The catch, the advance didnt show up until your first check. So if you're starving waiting for your start date to come, you might look into some part time work. If your starting entry level, I don't think you'd have much leverage in commanding a signing bonus.

Get a temp job. If you've already accepted, it's too late to ask for a signing bonus…and to ask for an advance on your pay is not likely to go over well. You don't want to give yourself a bad reputation before you even start.

    Thanks for the advice!

I don't have an offer at this time. Considering my options to be wise this time around with my job search and applications.

    The below article also helped….

I wouldn't ask an employer for an advance before my start date under any circumstances. It may work but you're also risking them (a) rescinding the offer or (b) developing a preconceived notion of you. Honestly that type of negation is only likely to be effective to a person with a very specific skill set that is highly in demand by the employer.

Find a temp job in the meantime, even if it's delivering pizzas. That's not the way you want to start your career.

Just as an other opinion also …

As an employer, I would not be comfortable with a newly hired employee asking for an up-front advance. While I wouldn't reconsider the employee, it would put me (as the employer) in an awkward position in relation to the candidate – applicant. I would also suggest looking for other sources of funding to hold you over until you receive your regular pay. Best of luck!

It's possible, but probably better to just borrow from family/friends if you can find a way.

My old office offered 1.5k advances as part of the standard offer, no signing bonuses though; however, that's usually negotiated during the offer time, not after the fact.

My big 4 signing bonus didn't show up until my second paycheck, just as an FYI.
