    How do post college applicants get into pubic accounting? I’m looking for events to meet the firms in the NYC area, there is one this Friday but it’s during the day. This seems pretty typical. Anyone have advice for how they were able to break in?

    I'm in a similar situation, except I haven't passed any of the 4 exams yet. I would suggest looking into joining local accounting organizations. I belong to the FICPA down here in Florida. They always send out emails with upcoming events, and I have never seen one that took place during the day.

    Also, I would suggest getting business cards made that you can hand out at networking events. I got a card made that has my name, phone number, email, accounting GPA, and preferred career path (tax). I also put a QR code on it that links directly to my resume.

    FAR - [10/07/2013 --> 66] [07/07/2014 --> 86]
    BEC - [08/31/2014 --> 86]
    AUD - [11/24/2014 --> 88]
    REG - [02/14/2015 --> 92]

    Whatever you do, don't bring up age issue. It should be a non-issue. What is relevant is your personality, passing of the CPA exam and what you can bring to the table or willing to exert effort!

    About breaking in: I got offered public accounting opportunity twice without putting much effort (was referred to by different individuals) but had declined twice up to this year. IMO, main vehicle to get referred is to network and socialize with people in industry. For the record, i'm 40 and after passing exam (a few weeks ago), another opportunity came up but I have not made a final decision yet b/c it will mean a paycut from private/gov at least initially.

    Becker Class of Jan - Aug 2013: FARB DONE!!!!
    CPA license pending 🙂

    it's totally a non issue, but I have a demanding full time job. All good things until it comes to attending these local recruiting events. I've been spending time trying to do cold call solicitations, but I just started. Not sure what else I can do this late in the game.

    I've been to a few recruiting seminars and the messages that I keep hearing over and over again is to use social media to your advantage. I've been recommended by my friends to use LinkedIn to contact recruiters at companies that I want to work at and research positions that I am interested in. It might be worth a shot to have someone you know on LinkedIn to refer you to a recruiter and take it from there.

    By the way I'm wondering what accounting event is this? I am in your area and I want to find out more about this event.

    REG: 86 8/3/13
    BEC: 85 8/31/13
    FAR: 87 10/27/13
    AUD: 90 11/30/13
