Hello. This is the first CPA exam section I’ve studied for. I’m working on BEC. I’m following the NINJA plan using only NINJA products. I’m on the first step of reading the book. My issue is I don’t feel like I’m retaining the information from reading the book. I could tell you 2 or 3 things from the 3 chapters I’ve read. Do I need to adjust something or do I just power through the book to check it off my to do list so I can focus on the MCQ portion? At what point should I actually be learning this information? Thank you for any advice!

It took me a long time to start remembering the BEC info as I studied. BEC is a mile wide and an inch deep. I slogged through BEC, studied for 12 weeks because I need the repetition to learn and remember everything. It absolutely sucked.

Just keep working at it and you will start retaining the info. Do MCQs as you complete sections. Always review prior sections to keep them fresh.

Watch videos – I used free youtube videos as a supplement to NINJA MCQs to provide one more way to retain the info.

Don't get discouraged. Organize your notes by topic so you can go back to that topics notes and review them as you work through MCQs.

Write all calculations down as you go. Make a note of why the answer was correct and others were incorrect. The more I wrote, the more I remembered.

    Repetition, repetition, repeat!

You can do this. Don't get discouraged. BEC covers a lot of different topics so just keep at it. I think it is easiest for someone who finished a MBA – for the rest of us, we have to slog through….

    Positive self-talk matters. Good luck!

Are you also able to access lecture? For me, the “magic solution” is the lecture and book combo. I can't do one without the other, so I need both to do the review successfully.

You might not retain the first time reading the information. I have started and stopped for years dreading reading the book. But I found that I retain better by just doing the mcq's and go back to the book to find some answers if necessary. I thought to myself. This can not be this simple. But it really is, so do some questions to get an idea of the topic and the maybe go back to the book if you need clarity. You can do this.

Some people are not reading learners.
You have to find the study method that best fits your learning style.
I gave up on trying to read the books somewhere during my first exam.
Just wasn't the most effective use of my time.
